Lahti, a city in southern Finland, has rolled out a public ski-sharing option, which is the first in the world. The skis can be borrowed from a ski point and returned there after use. There are three ski points in total, two in the city centre, and one near the Salpausselä ski stadium. A seven-time host city of The FIS Nordic World Ski Championships, Lahti has a strong tradition of winter sports, and with a total of more than 100 miles of cross-country skiing trails in the Lahti area. Not surprisingly, most locals are ski enthusiasts. In addition to the already extensive trail network, new skiing trails have been laid out in the city centre.
The city hopes the ski rental will not only bring locals out during the coldest season but also promote an emission-free way of getting around th city. Lahti is the current European Green Capital and has cut its total greenhouse gas emissions by 70 percent from 1990 levels.
